Georgia Audio and Stage Lighting…. The Man Behind the Talent! This month instead of reviewing one of your favorite local bands, I thought I would do something different and pay tribute to the one band member most of you usually never see or notice. While you’re dancing and parting, he’s in the background quietly watching, listening, and studying the dynamic of the room and your level of enjoyment. Yes, I’m talking about “The Sound Man”. The man who hooks up all the hundreds of cable wires, turns all the knobs, and gives you a stern look if you stagger too close to his sound board. Musicians of all kinds know a good sound man is valuable. He can make a new garage band sound worthy of a record deal or take a good band down. Which means working bands know a really good sound man should be treated with equal respect and guard him with their life! Being a sound man is not all glory, however. In fact, a lot of times they take a lot of unnecessary abuse. "My monitor level isn't right"; “I can’t hear my vocals”; "My guitar is not loud enough". Yes, the sound man deals with more than his/her share of the complaints. Related and unrelated! Not everyone has the patience or the naturally acquired gift to be a good sound man. This person must be able to hear all of the components of the music objectively, and then have the command of the equipment to produce the correct sound and eliminate problems. Some people have it, some don’t, which leads me into introducing my friend, Gary Atkinson, owner of Georgia Audio and Stage Lighting. Gary and I go way back to the beginning of my career and the re-birth of his. Being a drummer, a bandleader, a professional businessman, and a perfectionist, Gary has ALL the qualities of a great sound man, and he was with me every step of the way as I put together my own sound system. He’s very passionate about what he does, all his equipment is professional grade, and he’s worked with some of the best sound technicians such as Sonny Hankins, of the popular band, Phoenix. He’s dependable and he’s always willing to go the extra mile to ensure the sound and lighting logistics of the evening are perfect and everyone is having a good time. He’s a go-to sound guy with a good attitude and I’m proud to call him a member of my band! To find out more about Gary Atkinson and
